Were you keeping an eye on this year's Stofes in Nipponbashi, Osaka?

The 19th Nipponbashi Street Festa, Nipponbashi Street Festa 2026, was held on Sunday, May 17, 2026, in the Nipponbashi shopping street area of Den Den Town, Osaka's electronics and otaku shopping district.

According to the closing message on the official site, there were 240,000 visitors.

It's organized by the Nipponbashi Street Festa Executive Committee, made up of shopping street associations, companies, neighborhood associations and others. The day was apparently hit with "unseasonable heat," and the message also thanked everyone who came in cosplay.

The basics, and Sakaisuji turns into a pedestrian street

Here are the basics, from the official event overview and the notice from Naniwa Ward in the City of Osaka.

  • Date: Sunday, May 17, 2026, held rain or shine, canceled in severe weather
  • Venue: the Nipponbashi shopping street area (Sakaisuji, Ota Road, Stofes Plaza and more)
  • Sakaisuji open to pedestrians: 12:00 to 15:00 (traffic restrictions from 11:00 to around 15:30)
  • Entry: free. Anyone taking part in cosplay or with a camera needs a pass
  • Official ambassador: Enako (a well-known cosplayer)

According to the City of Osaka's notice, about 600 meters of Sakaisuji, the main avenue running alongside the Nipponbashi-suji shopping street, was opened to pedestrians.

So a big avenue that normally has cars running down it turns into a cosplay photo spot for just that one day.

Photo area hours were different for each spot: Ota Road (a side street lined with otaku shops) was open 12:00 to 14:30, while Stofes Plaza, Gokai Plaza and Namba Carnival Mall were open 11:00 to 17:00. Part of Stofes Plaza and Gokai Plaza were pass holders only.

Here's how the day's hours line up.

A chart of the hours at Nipponbashi Street Festa 2026 (May 17). Changing rooms open from 10:00 to 17:30 (with some exceptions). Traffic restrictions on Sakaisuji from 11:00 to around 15:30, with the street open to pedestrians from 12:00 to 15:00. The Ota Road photo area open from 12:00 to 14:30. The photo areas at Stofes Plaza, Gokai Plaza and Namba Carnival Mall open from 11:00 to 17:00.

Stofes (short for Street Festa) started in 2005. The Nipponbashi history page on the Den Den Town official site says it began with about 130,000 visitors and 300 cosplayers, and describes it now as one of the biggest cosplay events in Japan, drawing more than 10,000 cosplayers from all over the country.

Cosplayers and photographers both need a pass

Whether you're taking part in cosplay or shooting with a camera, the rule is to buy a pass (a wristband) in advance and wear it where staff can see it.

Apparently all pass sales go toward running the event. The official site explains that the cost of running changing rooms, plus rising material and staffing costs, have made things tough, and that the event's future is "uncertain."

There were two kinds of changing rooms. The general changing rooms, with no cap on numbers, were at places like Namba SkyO for women and Independent Theatre 2nd for men.

The other kind was the "limited-capacity changing room," with a set number of spots, using spaces in shops along the shopping street. A pass that came with a ticket for one of these cost 4,800 yen.

Changing rooms were open from 10:00 to 17:30, with some exceptions.

The famous cosplay parade needed a separate parade pass (a can badge) on top of the regular pass, and those sold out.

Shops turning their spaces into changing rooms feels very much like a shopping street event (the whole neighborhood throwing the party together is just adorable❣️)

The costume rules

The Participation Terms (Cosplay) go into a lot of detail about costumes and what you bring. These are the points that stand out most.

  • You can only change in changing rooms the organizers designate. Changing or doing makeup in station or public restrooms is not allowed
  • There are standards for exposure. With short costumes, you need spats, drawers or thick tights
  • Replica swords made of metal or hard materials are banned. Model guns must have no pellets in them and be unable to fire
  • No costumes that could be mistaken for someone claiming to be an official, like police officers or firefighters
  • No cutting wigs at the venue

Since the event draws lots of kids, families and tourists from overseas, cosplay of works for small children that goes over the top in a way that damages the work's image is also banned.

The photo rules, and the post-event notice

The Participation Terms (Camera) say that when you photograph a cosplayer, you show your pass and always get their permission.

You can only shoot in the designated spots, you're asked to avoid long shoots or blocking people from getting by, and tripods and reflectors are banned on public roads.

The terms say that if they find things like shots taken from an extremely low angle, they'll take measures that include checking the photo data and reporting it to the police.

On June 5, after the festa, the steering committee put out a notice about information being posted on social media about people secretly taking low-angle, upskirt-style photos.

Calling it a violation of the terms and a criminal act, they say they're consulting their legal adviser and considering options up to and including legal action.

They also said they need to consider changes that include a fundamental review of the photo rules, and the same notice says, "At present, the next festa is undecided."

Surely far more people follow the rules and just have fun, so this notice was frustrating to read (I really do want them back on that big avenue next year, though).

About this article

I put this article together from the Nipponbashi Street Festa 2026 official site (the event overview, cosplay event info, participation terms and the post-event notice), the traffic restriction notice from Naniwa Ward in the City of Osaka, and the Nipponbashi history page on the Den Den Town official site.

As of the organizers' notice, the next festa is undecided. Check the latest notices on the official site to see whether it will be held and how the photo rules are revised.
